ContactUS to Bring New Life, Jobs to Old Big Bear Building in Hilliard
COLUMBUS (Terri Sullivan/Sean Rowe) — New life for a Hilliard area grocery store that’s sat empty for more than ten years.
Big Bear closed the store at Mill Run, off of Cemetery Road, back in 2004. Kroger bought the site in 2005, but never developed it.
Kroger recently sold the site to ContactUS Communications, an office and call center.
ContactUS President Trevor Friesen says it’s set to become the headquarters for their customer service and sales work.
“We also do a lot of analytics type work, so it breaks away from the traditional call-center business,” Friesen said. “We’re trying to bring more intelligence value to our customers.”
Applications are now being taken for jobs that will occupy half of the 96,000-square-foot former Big Bear store.
About 350 new jobs are expected to be created, offering a wide range of pay levels. Everything from entry-level through professional positions with high salaries is being offered.
Kathy Coady, who grew up in the Hilliard area, says she’s glad something is moving into at least part of the old Big Bear store.
“I’m glad something is coming back,” she said. “I’ve lived around here since I was a kid. Grew up around here, went to the movies around here. I’m glad something coming in here,” Coady said. “I’d rather see retail come back here and rejuvenate this whole area.”
Sara Shirk was running into the Starbucks, which sits next door to the ContactUS recruiting office at Mill Run.
“I think it’s terrific for the area,” Shirk said.
“It’s been a long time coming. I just think this is a terrific area and it’s about time some businesses moved in.”
The ContactUS call center is expected to open in the next several weeks.
