ContactUS to Bring New Life, Jobs to Old Big Bear Building in Hilliard

COLUMBUS (Terri Sullivan/Sean Rowe) — New life for a Hilliard area grocery store that’s sat empty for more than ten years.

Big Bear closed the store at Mill Run, off of Cemetery Road, back in 2004.  Kroger bought the site in 2005, but never developed it.

Kroger recently sold the site to ContactUS Communications, an office and call center.

ContactUS President Trevor Friesen says it’s set to become the headquarters for their customer service and sales work.

“We also do a lot of analytics type work, so it breaks away from the traditional call-center business,” Friesen said. “We’re trying to bring more intelligence value to our customers.”

Applications are now being taken for jobs that will occupy half of the 96,000-square-foot former Big Bear store.

About 350 new jobs are expected to be created, offering a wide range of pay levels.  Everything from entry-level through professional positions with high salaries is being offered.

Kathy Coady, who grew up in the Hilliard area, says she’s glad something is moving into at least part of the old Big Bear store.

“I’m glad something is coming back,” she said. “I’ve lived around here since I was a kid. Grew up around here, went to the movies around here.  I’m glad something coming in here,” Coady said. “I’d rather see retail come back here and rejuvenate this whole area.”

Sara Shirk was running into the Starbucks, which sits next door to the ContactUS recruiting office at Mill Run.

“I think it’s terrific for the area,” Shirk said.

“It’s been a long time coming. I just think this is a terrific area and it’s about time some businesses moved in.”

The ContactUS call center is expected to open in the next several weeks.

Call center operator ContactUS plans 350 jobs at former Big Bear at Mill Run

The former Big Bear at Mill Run is in line to host hundreds of call center workers.

Brian R. Ball  Staff reporter- Business First

Fast-growing ContactUS Communications LLC had pledged to hire 350 workers in next the next few years if it can secure a tax incentive through the city of Columbus.

The manager of customer contact centers and associated business analytic consulting services will get a first reading of legislation supporting a five-year, 25 percent Jobs Growth Incentive at Columbus City Council on Jan. 27.

The company has identified the former Big Bear grocery store at the Market at Mill Run as its expansion location outside its German Village base of operations it established about two years ago.

The first phase of growth will take place in about half of the 100,000-square-foot space that Kroger Co. bought nine years ago for a Kroger Marketplace. Those plans never materialized, and the Cincinnati-based Kroger put the property back on the market.

ContactUS President Trevor Friesen confirmed ContactUS has put the Fishinger Boulevard property in contract. He tells me the company needs the space to supplement its initial operations on City Park Avenue in the city’s German Village neighborhood that it opened nearly two years ago. It has since leased temporary space on South Front Street in the Brewery District.

“We’ve won new customers in the second half of 2013 that has really accelerated our growth,” Friesen told me.

The Capitol Equities Realty brokerage has marketed the property built as a Big Bear in 1988 for nearly four years on behalf of Kroger.

ContactUS Expanding to Second Columbus Region Location, Adding 350 New Jobs

Columbus, OH – ContactUS, a leader in the business process outsourcing (BPO) space, has announced it will expand to a second Columbus Region location and add 350 full-time jobs in the next three years. With this investment and hiring commitment, ContactUS will increase its current workforce more than three-fold by 2017.

“ContactUS has seen a rapid and sustained increase in its client base, prompting the need to expand to a second location and boost our workforce significantly in the next few years,” said Trevor Friesen, president, ContactUS. “Being headquartered in the Columbus Region, we’re pleased to be able to stay local for the company’s next chapter of growth.”

The company’s $4 million investment includes allocations for workforce training as well as building acquisition and improvement costs for its new facility, set to be located at 3700 Fishinger Boulevard on the west side of Columbus. The investment is contingent upon state approvals, to be finalized February 24. The new facility will complement ContactUS’ existing location at 1108 City Park Avenue, in the city’s German Village neighborhood.

ContactUS has committed to create 350 new, full-time jobs with this expansion. Hiring for the call center-related positions is expected to begin this summer, with all openings filled by 2017. This latest investment is in addition to the company’s 2012 commitment of 150 new jobs, for which hiring is underway and is nearing completion.

“We are ecstatic that ContactUS is investing in a new facility and additional employees, even beyond its original commitment,” said Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman. “This effort will bring a significant number of high-quality jobs to Columbus and continue to reinforce our role as a hub for technology.”
